Is your name really “Lissy?” Or is that a nickname?
While I’d love a real nickname, my full first name is actually just Lissy. That’s it—a simple construction of five letters. You can pronounce it either in English—Lis-sea—or in Spanish—Lee-cee. I also occasionally answer to Lizzie, Lisa, Liz, L, Hey!, Hey, you! And my absolute favorite, Hey, girl!
Where are you from?
I hail from the sometimes sunny city of Miami, Florida.
Are you writing from Miami?
Actually, I’m reporting live from East Lansing, Michigan, specifically Michigan State University, home of the Spartans!
Well, I moved up here to study at MSU. Currently, I’m pursuing my Master’s in Telecommunications, Information Studies, and Media, with a focus on serious gaming. In fact, this blog is about games and meaningful play. I’m the official Social Media Guru (that’s a very real title, don’t laugh) for the Michigan State University Games and Meaningful Play group. (You’ll be hearing a lot more about these awesome faculty and students!)
What’s Serious Gaming?
Serious games include games for purposes other than, or in conjunction with, entertainment. It’s a broad field that incorporates games for education, change, exercise, health, advertising, and training, to name a few. In short, serious games are seriously awesome. In fact, Michigan State University offers a fully online graduate certificate in serious games, which is a big part of what attracted me to the program.
Do you have any screws loose in your head?
Why do you ask?
Because you’re talking to yourself.
That’s not a question.
Fine. What is this blog about?
I want to share with you the amazing developments in serious gaming, and frame gaming in a context you might not have seen before—as more than pure entertainment. I also intend to introduce you to the extensive and dazzling Serious Gaming faculty and students here at MSU, and their innovative work in the field, stemming from such broad subjects as projects with NASA to connecting Jewish communities with serious gaming.
